About QQ2006 (腾讯QQ) in Windows XP

QQ2006 was the version of Tencent QQ that most Chinese internet users ran on Windows XP in internet cafés and dorms. Its penguin tray icon, the knocking message sound, "火星文" nicknames and status lines like 离开 or 隐身 are a shared memory of the 2000s Chinese web.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my real QQ number here?
No. Nothing is sent to Tencent: any number and password logs in to a simulated QQ2006, and every friend is an AI persona set in 2006.
Who are the friends in this QQ2006?
AI-played Chinese netizens of 2006 (a high-school girl, a factory worker, your mum…). Friends you add by number get a persona made up on the spot. They chat only in Chinese, with 2006 slang like 偶 / 稀饭 / 886.
