About Command Prompt in Windows XP
In Windows XP the Command Prompt (cmd.exe) replaced the MS-DOS prompt of Windows 98/ME. It still understands the old commands — dir, cd, copy, del, ren, md, type, cls, ver — and prints "Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]" on start.
What works in this simulator
- dir, cd, md, rd, copy, move, del, ren, type, cls, ver, date, time, echo and more
- Runs .bat files and the built-in edit editor
- Works on the same virtual C: drive as Explorer
- Tab completion and command history
Frequently asked questions
- What version number does the Windows XP Command Prompt show?
- The ver command prints Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600], the build number of Windows XP.
- Is the Windows XP Command Prompt real DOS?
- No. cmd.exe is a 32-bit Windows program, not MS-DOS, although it accepts the classic DOS commands. In this simulator the commands are recreated in JavaScript and work on the virtual C: drive.
