About Notepad in Windows XP
Notepad.exe has been part of Windows since 1.0. The Windows XP version (5.1) is a tiny, fast editor with no formatting: one font, no rich text, a 64 KB-era heritage that was finally lifted so it could open large files. Programmers used it for config files and batch scripts, and its "Word Wrap" and "Time/Date" (F5) features became muscle memory.
What works in this simulator
- File, Edit, Format, View and Help menus with the original keyboard shortcuts
- Word Wrap, Go To line, Find / Find Next (F3), Time/Date (F5)
- Open and Save dialogs on a persistent virtual C: drive
- "Do you want to save the changes?" prompt on close
Frequently asked questions
- What is the keyboard shortcut for the time and date in Notepad?
- Press F5, or choose Edit > Time/Date. It inserts the current time and date at the cursor, in this simulator as in Windows XP.
- Can I save files from this online Notepad?
- Yes. File > Save writes a .txt file to the simulated C: drive (My Documents by default). It stays in your browser and is still there after a reload.
This is a free recreation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (Luna blue theme) written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript — nothing is downloaded or installed, and your files stay in your own browser. Open the full Windows XP desktop.
