About Paint in Windows XP
Paint began as a licensed copy of ZSoft PC Paintbrush in Windows 1.0. The Windows XP release is the last classic, unthemed Paint before the ribbon arrived in Windows 7: a left-hand toolbox of 16 tools, a colour box along the bottom and no layers, no transparency, only a single undo history of three steps. That simplicity is exactly why it became an internet-art tool for a generation.
What works in this simulator
- The 16-tool toolbox: Free-Form Select, Eraser, Fill With Color, Pick Color, Magnifier, Pencil, Brush, Airbrush, Text, Line, Curve, Rectangle, Polygon, Ellipse, Rounded Rectangle
- Flip/Rotate, Stretch/Skew, Invert Colors and Attributes dialogs
- Opens and saves images in the virtual file system
- Colour box with Edit Colors
Frequently asked questions
- Which version of Paint came with Windows XP?
- Windows XP shipped Paint 5.1 (mspaint.exe). It was the last version with the classic toolbox and colour box before Windows 7 introduced the ribbon interface.
- How many times can I undo in Windows XP Paint?
- Three. Paint 5.1 only remembers the last three actions for Edit > Undo (Ctrl+Z).
